Pocatello - en route to Yosemite

As we embarked on the 3 days of driving west back to California, we passed back through Yellowstone, and deeper into "Scenic Idaho". We picked out Pocatello as a good spot to rest our weary Terry (motorhome) and this had some surprises!

We'd promised the kids a dip in the local aquatic complex the next morning (our RV park didn't have a pool - we try to choose the ones that do) and we got there nearly an hour before it opened at midday. The lady suggested we check out the zoo over the road while we waited.

This was a funny sight, with the kids running around this very basic zoo in their cozzies!

As it turns out, it is a very momentous day for the town, as it was the grand opening of the new grizzly bear exhibit. It was packed (??) full of locals who had particular interest in the new enclosure, as the town lost their favourite bear just over a year ago at age 34 - the enclosure was meant for him and his mate Stripes, but Charlie died of old age before it was completed. One lady (mother of two) explained to Trent and I that she shared a birthday with Charlie and would bring a birthday cake to the zoo every year to celebrate with him - she missed him dearly, but was positive about the new exhibit and was forming a bond with Stripes. We took this all in solemnly, and started to feel very conspicuous in our beachwear!

It was really great to see the grizzy bear up close, having just been in yellowstone. And the rest of the zoo was really interesting and up close - they had a 4 month old orphaned baby black bear, bald eagle and a cute petting zoo.

Then it was back over the road to the aquatic complex for a dip - it was still stinking hot! This place was fab - although a little over regulated!
